6 Useful Methods to Deal with Boredom
I probably can’t even count the number of times I think “ugh, I’m bored.” or “This is boring.” during the week. I remember when I was a youngin, I used to walk around the house on rainy days and mutter “I’m bored.” At which point, my mom would interject with a multitude of things I could do. She would say things like “You could clean your room.” or “Read a book.” Although a clean room and a good book are invaluable now, those things never really interested me then.
Todd Goldfarb, a guest poster over at ZenHabits.com and writer We The Change, says “…boredom not only dominates our online culture but also acts as a silent black hole among humanity draining excitement and motivation from our lives.” He then goes on to give 6 ways one can reduce boredom and live a more productive life.
One method he recommends is:
Recognize [boredom] and sit with it. The first thing you need to do when boredom surfaces is to become aware of it. How often do your actions mindlessly drift in the direction of pointless and non-productive activity (like reading and promoting the Paris Hilton/Nicole Richie article)? Instead of contributing to the problem, become part of the solution and sit in silence with your boredom. Instead of taking negligent action, take NO action. Eventually you will start acting again, but with greater consciousness…and that is a good thing!
